What is Scalp Psoriasis?
Scalp psoriasis is a skin disease that may cause itchy, red skin with silvery or powdery dry scales. It can range from mild, with only light scaling to severe, with thick, crusted scales covering the whole scalp. Scalp psoriasis can appear in small patches on the scalp or move down along the hairline from the forehead to the back of the neck. It can also appear around the ears.
If you have scalp psoriasis, you're not alone! Roughly five million Americans have some form of psoriasis. Psoriasis often first appears when a person is between 15 and 35 years of age. Psoriasis isn't contagious or life-threatening, but it can be uncomfortable and make you feel self-conscious about your appearance.
What Causes Scalp Psoriasis?
While the exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, it is suspected to be hereditary. This means that there isn't anything you did to cause this condition. Psoriasis may be caused by an abnormal immune response in the body. We do know that psoriasis is a chronic condition and while it can't be completely cured, it can be controlled.
